Walgreens Shopping 7/25/2021 - How to Coupon at Walgreens

So, I started this blog with the intent of sharing my financial journey. It has been a rollercoaster, but I have learned a lot along the way. I figured one of the best ways I can help anybody reading this blog in search of any type of help is by sharing my shopping trips where I coupon heavily, my unique ways of earning money, and how I generally live outside of the box. So, here's my shopping trip at Walgreens from 8/5/2021.

It's kinda crazy that if this stuff wasn't on sale and if I didn't have coupons, that it would have cost me over $50. Instead, my subtotal came to $25.99 and I got $4 back in Walgreens cash. It could have been lower had I not been pickier about brands than I usually am. Usually, I don't have a preference for paper towels or toilet paper brands, but I'm tired of Scott Comfort toilet paper. Sometimes it doesn't feel like it lasts as long as I think it should, but if I had bought that instead of the Quilted Northern, my out-of-pocket cost would have been about $0.75 less. Fortunately, I actually needed everything I bought today, so I'm glad for any savings at all.

I used digital coupons that I found on the Walgreens app. I also used the Rakuten Cashback app to order my purchase online and pick it up in the store. I could also have gone to the store without ordering using the cashback app, but I saved a little bit more money by using the app. Just know that in order for you to have the best chance at being successful, you should have a plan before you go to the store.

Here was my shopping plan

  1. I considered everything that I needed around my home.
  2. I browsed the current Walgreens sales advertisement for sales on items I wanted to purchase.
  3. I checked for digital coupons that I could use in addition to the current sales for the items on my shopping list. Walgreens has its own loyalty program, where every purchase earns a small percentage of cashback/store credit. Also, if you purchase certain items/promotions, you'll earn additional Walgreens cash. For myself, I had a digital coupon that gave me $4 in Walgreens Cash for spending $20. Keep in mind, couponing at Walgreens can be tricky at times, especially if you want to do more sophisticated transactions that involve rolling over your rewards. But if you're a beginner or if you're just trying to lower your grocery bill without doing anything complicated, then you will be fine.
  4. I searched my other coupon and rebate apps for additional coupons and rebates for the items I wanted to buy.
  5. I went to the Rakuten app, which also has a website. I searched for Walgreens on the app, ordered the products I wanted online, then went to the store to pick up my order. Ordering through Rakuten allowed me to earn 4% back off my order cost. In other words, 4% of the total that I spent at Walgreens using the Rakuten app will be paid back to me by my choice of either check or PayPal once I reach the minimum payout threshold of $5.

Here's what I bought

- The General Mills cereal is currently on sale for $1.99. I had a digital coupon for $1.50 on two General Mills Cereal. That made it $2.48 for two boxes of Cheerios.

- The Nature's Bounty supplements are on sale buy one get one 50% off. I had two digital coupons. One was $3 off any Nature's Bounty stress supplements and the other was for $1 off any Nature's Bounty. Before sales and coupons, the vitamins would have cost me $22.98+tax. After coupons, they cost $17.24

- The Quilted Northern toilet paper 6 Megarolls was on sale for $5.99. I had a digital coupon for $1.50 off, which brought the cost down to $4.49.

- I did not have any coupons for the Viva paper towels although it was on sale for $4.99.

- I also purchased a bottle of peroxide for $0.99.

- I used a promo code when I made my purchase online which saved me an extra $0.20.

Factoring in what I earned in Walgreens Cash and in Rakuten cashback rewards, I was able to purchase everything for less than what it would have cost me for the full price of the vitamins. I consider that a win.
